Winter Tabletop Miniature Garden :-)

I planted this miniature center piece in a copper/ brass footed container that I inherited from my mother-in-law. I have been so busy at the shop that the only Christmas tree that I have at the moment is this tiny evergreen. And, the only fine china that I have out is the set on this tiny bistro set. I wonder if Santa will put the Christmas presents on our dining room table?

Winter is Arriving

Now that Fall is almost behind us Winter is nearing. It is my second favorite season. Things will slow down at the shop. I will start making homemade hot soups and bread and have time to make soaps, dolls, and such. Winter is also a time that I head down to Paris, TN. where things are nice and easy. I look forward to collecting little trinkets, having coffee with my sister and looking into the eyes of my dear mother as I listen to her speak. Life is good!

These fairies love an afternoon tea in the garden

I have been bitten by the fairy bug. My mind is spinning with ideas. From formal uppity fairies, to laid back and relaxed fairies to forest fairies. They are flying out of The PURE Gardener as fast as they appear. There is something about them that is very therapeutic and wonderful. They bring smiles to the faces of woman, children and even young men that are my employees who say that they are "so cool".

Miniature tea sets- that remind me of my childhood- are now finding new homes and renewed life in miniature gardens of my customers. This is good. I am working on a forest fairy garden that I will keep for myself but will have on display at the shop. I may work in a little mediation spot. It will represent a happy place to me. A place that I can escape to.

Easy Whipped Shea Butter

Easy Whipped Shea Butter recipe from Bramble Berry Soaps

This is a great recipe that I love so much that I wanted to share. I use organic ingredients and essential oils. My favorites are rose, patchouli, and sandalwood.

Ingredients
14 oz Shea Butter
5 oz Coconut Oil
6 ml Cranberry Fig Fragrance Oil (or your choice)
Electric Mixer
4 ounce jars

Instructions
Combine all ingredients and whip for 6-7 minutes in an electric mixer on medium/high. Spoon into jars. That's it. You're done!

Easy, right? Who knew something great could come out of an afternoon of experimentation in the soap lab? I've been using it on my elbows and feet and totally love it!

The Two Sisters August 2009

My little house in Paris, TN- The Two Sisters. I usually head down to relax, see my family and to my little house every year in December after the busy Holiday season is over. This year we are going down there a little later than usual- not until a week and only for a few days. But, in those few days I will be taken away from stress, the schedules, meetings, complications of everyday life, and reality in general. Well, the reality that I have created :-) It is hard to explain how I am attached to this little house and how at peace I am when I am there.

So, to the Two Sisters I am headed in a week and I am busy now collecting things like white dishes, incense and sage, trinkets and another rocker to take to her. Where I will relax and regroup. Thank God for the little things in life.

My daughter and I made some jewelry tonight. Here are a couple of pieces that were made.

This necklace is made from a brass bird, crystal beads, vintage copper chain, and a light blue ribbon. It was finished with aged brass wire wrapping. Simple but pretty.

"God Is" is a hand made sterling silver pendant by Cathy Dailey on Etsy. I love their pieces! Tiger's eye was strung with, fresh water pearls, and various crystals on steal cable with sterling silver beads and a copper lobster claw enclosure.

I am in desparate need of comfy seating in my Tanasi home and these beautiful, fun chairs would be so nice scattered here and there. They are reclaimed chairs that are given a new beautiful life. I especially am fond of the swivel rockers with a pocket on the side. They are a bit out of my price range but until then, I can fantasize :-)

Woodland Fall Sprites in the Making

This little Fall Sprite is in the making. I am not sure if I have been in the garden too long or my imagination is getting the best of me but, I have this urge lately to make woodland creatures and their woodland homes. I started this little guy this morning and I am sure that it will end up on Etsy- my outlet for all the things that I dream up in my head.

The wings are pine cone "petals" that I plucked from a rather large pine cone. I will soon paint them and make them oh so pretty.

Her "crown" is made from an acorn top and is adorned with chamomile flowers and glitter.

Her "bottom" is created from a tip of a bottle brush. She soon will resemble a moth.

I need to make her arms out of clay or something. I haven't decided yet.

Fun Little Creations Inspired by Nature

I found this shell tea set from the sixties at the thrift store and was inspired to make these pin cushions with faux and real moss, batting, and woodland shell straight pins. I love the way they turned out. The tea pot is my favorite! The shell straight pins turned out better than I had hoped. The "match book" holders are made out of felt made from recycled plastic and paper.

Cat Woman- My camera is on the way out so I didn't take many photos and they are blurry.

On my last trip to my little house in TN, I decided to take a few photos of some of my dad's wood carvings. These are hand carved from fallen trees that he finds. They are both still in the works. One is a "cat women" of some sort. They are extremely smooth to the touch. He is very talented. This one has hooves for feet. Again, my camera was not cooperating.

This a little sketch that I scanned from my journal- a self portrait of what I see when I look in the mirror. You may or may not know that I was in a fatal car accident when I was 16 years old. I died twice and my nose, sinuses, cheek bone and right eye socket was crushed. I was left with scar number 1, 4 & five, severe sinus problems, and one eye larger than the other in appearance. Luckily the plastic surgeons did a good job. Although my right cheek bone feels numb at times, and I suffer from headaches frequently. I received scar #2 when my cousin- Kelly pushed me down a flight of stairs. Scar number 3 happened one summer night when I was playing hide and seek catch with the neighborhood kids. One boy, Javier, thought it would be a good idea to drop a spear from the second floor back porch while calling my name. As I looked up the spear hit me just below my right eye. Such a surprise considering I didn't see it coming in the dark. Thank God it missed my eye. I got scar number 6 at the age somewhere around 3 years old when I was leaning against the back of my Uncle Sherman chair and it fell backwards. I can't recall where scar number seven came from.

All of these scars are somewhat faded and may be hard to see unless I point them out. Of course the eyes, I can do nothing about. But the scars that really hurt are the scars on the inside...the ones that no one can see. The ones that I carry around deep inside. Little nicks and cuts that have shaped me and are a part of me. Those are the scars that cannot be seen. They are a part of me...

Lately, I haven't had the time to create art pieces to list on Etsy. I have my hands full of art of a different sort. I own a small organic garden center called The PURE Gardener and we are in full swing. Gardening is one of my passions. And, edible gardening is a favorite of mine. So, I am quite busy planting here and there - although I miss my Etsy shop....I will be back at it as soon as the dust settles :-)

Upcycled Discarded Baby Dolls

My father brought my daughter a bag of old dolls that he found abandoned in an old 1800's house in TN. He thought that she could make something with them or practice sewing by making them doll clothes. Some of them were in pretty rough shape. So, my sister - who was in town visiting me- and I decided that all of us would breath new life into them by painting them and upcycling them. We had quite a lot of fun! My daughter is working on a purple metallic one, I have finished one ( below ) and have one in the works, and my sister has almost two completed.

This "new" dolly has hope and love now!

She was the worst in the group. Now she is very happy and ready for a new home.

Strange Altered Art Dolls In The Works

Every now and again I have the need to make strange art dolls out of found doll parts and vintage things. I can't stop myself. I am not sure what this doll is all about. But it is filled with glitter and 30 mini babies and about 5 safety pins. I will list it on Etsy with all its glory when I feel that the little guy is complete.

Toxic Kenny is what I have named the doll in the works to the left of the Baby Bottle. I got the idea to start him when a fellow X friend went crazy on me and snapped right out of left field. I realized that he was harboring a lot of anger and sadness and was very toxic. Kenny will be complete after I put 100's of ants crawling all over him. They are attracted to his sweet exterior. They are in for a very unpleasant surprise!

The Fireman is something that I am stuck on. He is still in the works.

I am working on an altered art doll of Leda and the Swan. She is a bit strange but I am having fun with her.
Leda and the Swan is a motif from Greek mythology, in which Zeus came to Leda in the form of a swan.

"Leda and the Swan" is a poem by William Butler Yeats first published in 1928 (below). Combining psychological realism with a mystic vision, it describes the swan's raping of Leda.

Jack THE Candlestick Snowglobe Altered Art Doll

Jack IS the Candlestick! Jack is his own worst enemy. He is suffering from extreme opposites of Yin & Yang, Fire & Water, and he needs to find balance between them in order to find peace.

He is a republican who has suffered 8 long years of President Bush. His world as he knew it has come tumbling down around him. He wields a gun and is not sure how to use it.

Jack is made from an antique Austrian Candlestick, an antique salt shaker, & an 1800's German doll head. He is embellished with an antique toy gun, bone dice, & jacks. The dice are both face up with 4's to symbolize each term of Bush. There are 4 Jacks. He has an elephant hanging from his letter "J". A candle flame made out of an old Franks Nursery & Crafts Christmas light bulb sets on top of his "helmet". And last but not least, a mustache.

He is a snow globe filled with glow in the dark glitter. The handle can be held and the glitter can be shaken and gently but slowly swirls around. Jack is very cool.

Frida Kahlo Altered Art Doll- Snowglobe

I have always LOVED Frida Kahlo. I can relate to her on many, many levels. This is the first in a series of Frida Kahlo items that I plan to do.

Frida Kahlo is made from an antique Fiesta Ware sugar bowl, leaded crystal salt shaker, an 1800's German doll head, & a sterling silver "crown".

She is adorned with many beads, charms, and lilies. I have attached several of her works of art affixed to Gringo bottle caps. A cross with Jesus hangs from her neck. She has green mother of pearl beads around her waist and garnets around her neck. Various semi-precious stones adorn her crown along with beads that spell out FRIDA.

She has a snow globe/ water globe filed with a mix of green and glow in the dark glitters. She is mucho fantastico!

She is titled and signed by me.

As I sit here in my studio, I listen to the rain outside gently washing away the long, long Winter. I haven't yet closed the valves of my rain barrels so the water is pooling and echoing before it runs out the spouts. Although the day is gloomy, there is something beautiful about the rain. It is a sign of things to come. I know that my flower bulbs are getting ready to put on a show. My garlic will soon be showing signs of new growth. And, it won't be long before I have green onions a plenty. Spring will soon be here. The long winter sleep will come to an end. That is the beauty of rain.

A feel good steampunk necklace!

Sterling Silver Large Linked Chain.

This 1800's pink porcelain unglazed doll part was unearthed from the grounds of a German doll factory that was bombed several times in war. She is 1 1/2" and is suspended from a large linked sterling silver chain. Her arms are strung with red glass beads from Czechoslovakia and are reaching upward towards a pewter charm. On one side it states "love Much" and the other states "Laugh Often". Attached to her- crudely with silver wire- is a large hand blown glass heart with a tiny sterling silver heart attached to it. "Through my Brokenness I am Healed." This is very healing statement to make and so very true. There are many journeys that we must take in order to find ourselves and breast cancer surely is a journey that no one chooses to go on. But when she comes through this journey, with hope and prayers a woman's brokenness is healed and a newness of life begins.

This necklace is made from a sterling silver chain which I have imperfectly wired pink cats eye & Czechoslovakian glass beads at every 7th link to symbolize spirituality and Godliness. I used a sterling silver lobster claw for and enclosure. An unearthed tiny 1 1/2 doll part- from an 1800's doll factory in Germany- is then suspended with her "arms" reaching upward towards a sterling silver Hope circle. An antique pocket watch face is suspended, upside down, from the "angel."

This necklace is made with love and hope for all of those who's soul's are challenged by breast cancer.

I was inspired to make this necklace after watching Rev. Joseph Lowery's speech at President Obama's Inauguration, 1-20-2009. He stated that we needed to mend our brokenness and I was very moved by his words.

These necklace & earrings are for those of us who are thrown so deeply in love that there is no escape. We are helpless and must surrender.
This tiny 2" porcelain doll was excavated from the earth surrounding German doll factories dating back to the eighteen hundreds. They were bombed during the war but she has survived, a little broken but she still has something to offer. I crudely wrapped copper & brass wire around her and suspended a vintage watch face. I strung glass beads from Czechoslovakia, brass beads, shells and cultured pearls on a steal cable & then suspended three watch gears. The ends of the necklace are finished with more crudely wrapped copper wire and a copper toggle enclosure. Necklace is Titled, Signed, and numbered on back of watch face.
